The British Virgin Islands 5 Star Hotels and Luxury Resorts

On the BVI, there are no high-rise hotels All the British Virgin Islands hotels are oceanfront properties bursting with character and most are set up as individual villa-style guest suites. Each of them offers an extensive range of amenities and conveniences, including private Michelin-starred chefs, dedicated water taxis, butlers, private infinity and plunge pools, and much more.

Choose from the ultra-secluded Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda or the historic former rum distillery-turned-luxury-resort Sugar Mill Hotel on Tortola. The BVI also has several private and ultra-exclusive islands with luxury private villa rentals.

There's Richard Branson's famed Necker Island, tranquil Guana Island with no televisions anywhere, posh Scrub Island, luxurious Oil Nut Bay, celebrity-favorite Peter Island, and casual Cooper Island, often referred to as the best-kept secret in the BVI.

Renting Luxury Villas or Luxury Resorts - Which One Is Right for You?

There's no bad way to vacation on the BVI. Deciding between a private luxury villa rental or a 5 star luxury resort ultimately comes down to your preferences and the specifics about your trip.

If exclusive beach access, privacy, and having shared spaces to enjoy together are priorities, an oceanfront luxury villa is the clear way to go. If, however, you're traveling with a group that may have differing travel agendas or you want individual spaces for everyone, a 5 star luxury hotel may suit your needs better.

Luxury private villas do offer a more personalized and customizable experience. Are you looking for a private masseuse, chef, or butler? Would you love to walk in and have your refrigerator already stocked for the week? If so, look no further than a private villa in the BVI.

All luxury villas and home rentals come with signature concierge travel service, so if there's anything at all that you want or need, it's a mere phone call away.

Where are the British Virgin Islands?

The BVI is a Caribbean archipelago comprised of more than 50 small islands and cays. It’s located in the Lesser Antilles region of the Caribbean Sea, just northeast of the United States Virgin Islands. Bermuda lies to the north, Puerto Rico is to the west, and Anguilla lies to the east.

The four main islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. Of the remaining islands, only 12 are inhabited. One could spend a lifetime exploring "Nature's little secrets."

Why Visit the British Virgin Islands?

The islands have done an excellent job keeping commercial development to a minimum, so you won't find many high-rise buildings and chain restaurants here. Instead, you'll find miles and miles of broad sandy beaches and an authentic local culture centered around creole cuisine, colonial architecture and music.

The main attractions in the BVI are the beaches and the spectacular clear blue ocean. While most activities center around them, there are several other things to do as well.

"Island hopping," or visiting multiple islands by boat, is an extremely popular activity in the British Virgin Islands. This part of the Caribbean is largely considered one of the best areas for sailing in the entire world. Renowned trade winds help create calm seas and wind speeds that are absolutely perfect for sailing almost all the time.

Scuba diving and snorkeling are also common activities for visitors to the BVI. The waters surrounding the islands are teeming with barracudas, sea turtles, and reef fish in every color imaginable. There are also a number of shipwrecks that can be explored, as well as several underwater snorkeling trails along coral reefs.

The Baths national park in Virgin Gorda is one of the most iconic destinations in all of the BVI. The massive boulders create hidden grottoes and natural pools, perfect for exploring and swimming through.

Rum is almost a sub-culture in the British Virgin Islands, and touring one of the historic distilleries is a popular and unique activity. The Callwood Distillery in Cane Garden Bay on Tortola is the longest continuously-running rum distillery in the world. Not only can you take a tour, but you'll learn how to make a signature Painkiller cocktail — and get to sample your creation.

Perhaps one of the most unique must-see destinations in the BVI is Willy T., a decommissioned tanker ship converted to a floating bar. The original Willy T was destroyed in Hurricane Irma in 2017, but the owners have since found a suitable replacement. Other favorite watering holes, some only reachable by boat are the Soggy Dollar, Foxies and the Bitter End.

What Are the Top British Virgin Islands to Vacation on?

The most popular islands in the BVI are two of the largest, Virgin Gorda and Tortola. The other two larger islands are Anegada and Jost Van Dyke, often referred to as simply Jost. There are over 50 additional small islands and many of them, such as Guana Island, Peter Island, and Cooper Island, have ultra-exclusive luxury villa rentals private beach houses, and resorts.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the BVI?

There is truly no bad time to visit the British Virgin Islands. All year-round, the average temperatures range from the mid-70s to the upper 80s, regulated in part by the region's consistently-blowing trade winds.

The rainy season technically runs from May to November, with hurricanes being most likely between June and November. However, even during the peak of the rainy season, storms tend to be short-lived and days are primarily sunny.

How to get to the British Virgin Islands?

The main airport in the BVI is the Terrance B. Lettsome Airport (EIS), and Virgin Gorda (VIJ) has a small airport that can accommodate prop planes. There are no connecting flights from the United States (or most other countries, for that matter).

Instead, almost all flights to the BVI must connect on larger islands such as Puerto Rico, Antigua, St. Thomas, or St. Maarten. Once you arrive, there are many inter-island charter flights and ferries to connect you to your final destination. Passports are required to enter the BVI.
