Tuscany 5 Star Hotels and Luxury Resorts

The best luxury hotels in Tuscany are just as diverse as the surrounding natural landscape. There's the ultra-luxe and exclusive Palazzo Magnani Feroni with its quintessentially Florence style in a restored historic building in the heart of the city.

Also in Florence, the contemporary Hotel Cerretani Firenze offers a perfect blend of refined Old World charm and modern comforts with a fantastic location in a prime shopping district. On the relatively secluded Argentario Coast, you'll find one of the finest Tuscany beach resorts, the Hotel Il Pellicano, one of the region's hidden gems.

Renting Luxury Villas or Luxury Resorts - Which One Is Right for You?

Deciding whether to stay in a Tuscany private villa or in one of the exclusive luxury resorts in Tuscany is no easy task. While you truly can't go wrong either way, it may help to consider the preferences and needs of your group.

Tuscany's 5 star hotels are some of the finest in Europe and place you in highly desirable areas within walking distance of shopping, dining, and popular attractions. However, many people prefer more privacy and the ability to completely customize their vacation – often at the drop of a hat.

In addition, renting a Tuscany villa can be cost-efficient — and more fun than staying in a hotel— when you're traveling with a group. A private villa rental means you don't have to book multiple hotel rooms. It also often means private patios, sundecks, swimming pools, kitchens, dining areas, and more.

If having a private pool in the heart of the Tuscan countryside appeals to you or you like the idea of having a private chef prepare your breakfast as you look out over a vineyard, a luxury Tuscany villa is absolutely the way to go.

Additional services to make your stay more comfortable are always available, such as grocery delivery, car service, private chefs, or other needs, the concierge team at WIMCO Villas is happy to arrange it all at no extra cost.

Where is Tuscany and Why Visit?

Tuscany, or Toscana in Italian, is a region in western central Italy situated along the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas. It's made up of 10 provinces, including Florence, Pisa, Lucca, and Siena. The region is defined by a wonderfully captivating mix of iconic Renaissance landmarks, world-famous works of art.

Private luxury villas in historic Old World-style architecture, colorful countryside of vineyard-covered rolling hills, miles of sparkling coastline with both beaches and rugged hiking trails, and incredible cuisine that's somehow gourmet and yet rustic.

There is truly something for everyone in Tuscany, along with a luxury Tuscany villa. Whether you're a lover of fine art, a history buff, an outdoor enthusiast, an oenophile or a foodie, a shopaholic, someone who likes to be in the middle of all the action, or someone looking to get away from it all, you'll find what you seek in Tuscany, Italy.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Tuscany?

Summer is the most popular time to rent a Tuscany vacation villa, when the region has very little rain and temperatures are in the 80s. Beaches and tourist attractions are extremely busy during the summer months, so consider visiting in the spring or fall if your schedule allows it. Both seasons bring consistent temperatures in the mid-70s and low chances of rain. If you're considering renting a Tuscany villa in September or October, many of the area's wineries harvest their grapes then, so there are many harvest festivals.

Tuscany's low season falls between late fall and early spring, November to March. While you can still visit many attractions and undoubtedly have a wonderful trip, it's important to note that this is the area's rainy season and temperatures are significantly colder. Daily highs often only reach the 40s and 50s from December to February.

How to get to Tuscany?

There are two major airports in Tuscany: The Aeroporto di Firenze-Peretola in Florence (FLR) and the Galileo Galilei Airport in Pisa (PSA). While there are no direct flights into either from the U.S., travelers do have a few different options.

Several U.S. cities have direct flights to both Rome and Milan, including New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., Miami, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Tuscany is about three hours by car or two hours by train from either city. Another option is to fly into Pisa or Florence via a connection in London or Lisbon. You can fly directly to London from many major U.S. cities.

A U.S. passport is required to visit Italy, and it must be valid for at least six months after your intended departure date. American citizens are not required to have a visa if their visit will be less than 90 days.

Contact WIMCO's air department to book your flights.

What are the top five things to do in Tuscany?

Tuscan Archipelago National Park - Just off of Tuscany's coast sits an archipelago of seven islands, each of them distinctly different from one another. The national park was established in 1996 to protect the islands' unique biodiversity and culture.

Elba is the largest island and most commonly visited, but each of them has an abundance of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, as well as opportunities for dolphin and whale watching. The archipelago is also the home to several world-class diving and snorkeling sites. You can reach the islands via boats from Tuscany's major ports or by charter plane.

Leaning Tower of Pisa - Arguably the most popular attraction in Tuscany, this 8-level bell tower is actually hollow inside – a surprise to most visitors – which means you can go inside it and walk around the top.

The 500-year-old marble columns are stunningly intricate and worth a visit in and of themselves. However, the tower is actually just one component of Piazza dei Miracoli, or Square of Miracles, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the Camposanto, the Battistero, and the Duomo also sit.

Florence - Regardless of where you select a private villa in Tuscany, a trip to Florence is a must. It's Tuscany's capital city and is considered the world capital of Renaissance art and architecture, as well. Visit one of the many art museums or galleries, shop the San Lorenzo market, take a stroll through the Boboli Gardens, or simply wander the cobblestone streets and take in the sights, sounds, and delicious smells.

Michelangelo’s Statue of David - This iconic 17-foot tall marble sculpture is famous all the world over and can be found at the Galleria dell’Accademia in the heart of Florence. Even if you don't have time to tour the rest of the city, the David statue is worth the special trip. You can take tours daily all year, with the exception of Mondays. Interestingly, there are two replica statues in Florence, but only the one housed in the Galleria is the real deal.

Food & wine tours - Tuscany is world-renowned for its cuisine and wine, particularly the red wines of Chianti and Brunelo di Montacino. Many luxury Tuscany villas are very close to some of the region's best wineries and you can tour them or have tastings throughout the year. To go along with the vino, be sure to visit some of Tuscany's world-class restaurants. The region is famous for its rustic dishes with a focus on earthy ingredients such as truffles, olive oil, bread, and red meat.

Florence Villas

"Surprisingly small as it is, Florence looms large on the world's 'must-sees' list—and not just for its unmatched treasure chest of art. Rich in culture, backdropped by history and anchored by family, faith and food, the Florentine lifestyle is enviably sweet." – LonelyPlanet.com

Picturesque and rich with culture, Florence is one of the top choices for travelers seeking to visit Tuscany. The birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is draped in art, history, and architecture. In addition to its appreciation of heritage, Florence is also ripe with modern luxuries including high-end designer shops (with brands like Prada, Gucci, and Salvatore Ferragamo), authentic Tuscan cuisine, and—of course—an abundance of local wine.

Although Florence is a city, it feels slower and calmer than its famous tourist counterparts. While streets may be filled with pedestrians, visitors stroll with an unhurried gait—often enjoying a gelato while they window shop. Take time to marvel at the architecture and take in the local art. You may also enjoy exploring landmarks such as the Santa Maria del Flore cathedral and the famous Uffizi art gallery which houses masterpieces from historical artists including Michelangelo and Botticelli.

Outside of Palio time, the square is perfect for a leisurely stroll or to indulge in the simple yet flavorful Tuscan cuisine.

Siena is a chef's dream, with the largest market in Tuscany held every Wednesday at La Lizza from 8:30 to 1:30.
